Just before Easter Sunday a young medical student leaves the student home, and begins an almost dreamlike peregrination through the city of Warsaw. Carrying all his belongings in a suitcase, he visits his father, who lives in a home for retirees. The old man gives him a receipt from a pawn shop and an address. When Jan arrives there, he meets a woman who gives him a saber. With his suitcase and saber in hand, Jan resumes his wanderings, and meets a beautiful young woman who drives a tram...

Jerzy Skolimowski returns as Andrzej, the restless, alienated outsider from his first feature Identification Marks. Andrzej decides to enter a boxing tournament despite the fact that odds are very much against him. The night before the fight he encounters Teresa, a girl he knew at University before he was expelled. He spends the night with her and then goes on to win his next fight by a «walkover».

On an early morning in Poland Andrzej leaves his sleeping wife to appear before the draft board. Much to the board’s surprise, he demands immediate enlistment on the grounds that he has just given up ichthyological studies and intends to start an adult life. As he has a few hours left before departure for military service, he returns home, does shopping and takes a sick dog to be put down by a veterinarian. He borrows money from a friend he meets by chance. He meets Barbara, who seems to him the girl of his life, on a tram, goes home to get his suitcases and runs to the station.

Mike is an introverted 15-year-old that has recently finished school. Because he cannot find other work he takes a job as an attendant at the Newford public baths in the suburbs of London. There he meets an attractive red-headed co-worker, Susan, who is a little bit older and more worldly wise. The impressionable teenager develops a crush on Susan, but the cruel tease pulls him near and then pushes him away. His emotional immaturity begins to tell when he struggles to come to terms with her affair with a married swimming instructor. Fuelled by obsessive love, he is planning to sabotage their relationship but this ends with tragic consequences.

Skolimowski’s first film made in the West. Its protagonist, nineteen-year-old Marc, works as a hairdresser’s apprentice in Brussels and dreams about becoming a racing car driver. He enters his name for a rally due to start in two days, but does not have a car and goes to great lengths to acquire one. However, when he’s finally in a position to participate in the competition, he and his girlfriend stop at a hotel to get some sleep and they oversleep the rally.

Leon, who was brought up by his grandmother, is a somewhat dreamy, if not slow-witted, middle-aged man, who cannot fight for himself. As a result of this weakness, those around him repeatedly misunderstand and abuse him. Leon falls in love with Anna, a nurse, working in a local hospital, whose rape he once witnessed. Too shy to tell her about his feelings, he sneaks into her room when she is sleeping, washes the dishes, brings her flowers and even tries to put a diamond ring on her finger, bought with his redundancy money.
