This year’s “Asian Extreme” seems to be the most interesting in the past few years. Besides the traditional far-eastern creations in the “action” genre, it includes acute political and exquisitely poetic works.
The program starts with “Poetry” by Lee Chang-dong, one of the most powerful films of the past Festival in Cannes, which received the prize for the best screenplay. We will be screening “Mundane History” (a “Tiger” in Rotterdam) by Anocha Suwichakornpong, a filmmaker from Thailand, a very fashionable cinematic country, the birthplace of the Cannes winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul. The viewers will also see “Prince of Tears” by the Taiwanese Yonfan, which participated in the competition in Venice, “Clash” by the Philippine Pepe Diokno (Venice Horizons Award and Dino De Laurentiis Award).
And finally the main classic of far-eastern cinema Tsai Ming-liang, who attended the MIFF a short time ago, will present “Face”, a treatise on the interrelations of biblical mythology, the French New Wave (represented by Jean-Pierre Leo, Jeanne Moreau and other Truffaut actors) and his own works.
