Director: AKI KAURISMAKI, PEDRO COSTA, VICTOR ERICE, MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA
The Portuguese city of Guimarães was European Cultural Capital for 2012. To celebrate that, four directors - two local maestros, a neighbour (Basque) and an outsider (Finnish) - were asked to make an omnibus film on 'the stories the city has to tell'. They give an idiosyncratic, varied picture in substance, style and tone. Aki Kaurismäki (1957, Orimatilla, Finland) despite having been rejected by the Finnish film academy became a world-famous director. His films, from Drifting Clouds to The Man Without a Past, which won the prize for Best Direction at Cannes in 2002, are known for their dry humour, simple style and restrained acting.
